I’m using this map as reference for an illustration assignment about designing villains and their lairs. My idea is a combination of the imperialistic attitudes of the 1800’s, and hipster appropriations of cultures. Fun stuff to draw… hopefully it’ll turn out well and I’ll post it in the future.
Looking at this map, I started wondering what the British thought about their own world dominance. The peoples of the world are so beautifully depicted in the map borders, it seems as though they did have a genuine appreciation for foreign cultures. In a distorted way, maybe they even thought thought they were bettering the world by dominating and lording over all these foreign, wild societies.
Regardless of the sinister subject matter, this 1886 map is amazingly beautiful. View it in its full spendor here.
